HONDURAS COFFEE & CULTURE ADVENTURE

This 14-day trip will take you across western and northern Honduras, where you will immerse yourself in the landscape of Honduran coffee production, explore ancient Mayan ruins, hike rain forest trails, and bask in tropical beaches.

If this is your first trip to Honduras you will experience many of the country’s highlights, as well as some hidden gems. The trip highlights include a visit to the Copan Archaeological Park, a must-see UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Museum of Mayan Sculpture, and visit coffee farms in Marcala, the first region in Central America with a Denomination of Origin designation for its coffee. You will also have the opportunity to hike trails in Pico Bonito & Santa Barbara National Parks and visit coffee farms in the western highlands home to the Lenca people. Last but not least, in Cayos Cochinos you will visit a Garifuna fishing village, swim and snorkel in crystal clear water, explore coral reefs and taste traditional foods.

Day 1: San Pedro Sula – Copan Ruinas
• Meet & greet in San Pedro Sula airport (airport code: SAP)
• Transfer to Copan Ruinas (approx. 4 hours from airport)
• OPTIONAL after dinner presentation about Honduras and trip description
• Overnight in Copan (Casa de Café B&B or Hotel Copan Colonial or similar)

Day 2: Copan Ruinas
• Breakfast (included in hotel)
• AM: La Laguna birding walk on route to the coffee farm
• AM: Visit Finca San Isidro (1250-1450masl, Varieties: Red Catuai, Icatu)
• PM: Horseback ride in the Copan Valley surrounding the town, including the Maya-Chorti village of La Pintada
• Overnight in Copan (Casa de Café B&B or Hotel Copan Colonial or similar)


Day 3: Copan Ruinas – Veracruz, Copan
• Breakfast (included in hotel)
• AM: Guided tour of the Copan Archaeological Site and the Museum of Mayan Sculpture
• Lunch and coffee farm tour in Finca Santa Isabel
• Transfer to Hacienda Montecristo in Veracruz, Copan, a +100 year old estate
• Overnight in Hacienda Montecristo

Day 4: Veracruz – Santa Rosa de Copan - Veracruz
• Breakfast (included in hotel)
• Hacienda Montecristo farm tour and roasting room visit. Farm is at 1200masl, Varieties include: Pacamara, Parainema, Maragogype, Caturra, Red Catuai, Yellow Catuai, Ovata, IHCAFE-90, Lempira, Marsellesa
• PM: walking tour of Santa Rosa de Copan, the town with the most independent coffee shops in Honduras
• OPTIONAL: dinner in a restaurant in Santa Rosa, for example: Restaurante Lenca Maya
• Overnight in Hacienda Montecristo


Day 5: Veracruz – La Campa – Gracias
• Breakfast (included in hotel)
• Transfer to La Campa, Lempira
• Visit a traditional Lenca pottery artisan in her workshop
• Transfer to Gracias, Lempira
• Overnight Gracias, Lempira (Hotel Guancasco or similar)
• OPTIONAL: take an evening dip in the thermal hot springs near town

Day 6: Gracias – La Esperanza - Marcala
• Breakfast (included in hotel)
• Walking tour of Gracias historic center
• Transfer to Marcala
• On-route to Marcala time for lunch in La Esperanza, and town center walk
• Overnight Marcala
• Marcala is the first region in Central America to have a Designated Denomination of Origin Seal for its coffee

 

Day 7: Marcala
• Breakfast (included)
• AM: Visit and tour of Finca Pinar del Rio with coffee tasting and lunch included. Farm is at 1300masl, 30 coffee varieties on the farm, and seed bank, including: Geisha, Mondonovo, Bourbon, Maragogype, Tipica, Purpura, Moca, and more. Francisco the owner is a very innovative farmer, lunch at his house on site
• PM: Visit Finca El Naranjo/La Cueva and coffee tasting on site on a wooden deck overlooking the farm (1300-1600masl, Varieties: Geisha, Bourbon, Catuai
• Overnight Marcala

 

Day 8: Marcala – Lake Yojoa
• Breakfast (included)
• Cupping session of local specialty coffees, led by Ivan Ernesto from Finca Los Catadores
• Transfer to Lake Yojoa (driving time: approx. 3 hours)
• Overnight near Lake Yojoa (D&D Hotel and Brewery or similar)

Day 9: Lake Yojoa – El Cedral – El Porvenir, Atlantida
• Breakfast (included)
• Visit organic coffee farm and tropical orchid garden in El Cedral, cloud forest area coverage
• Transfer to the Caribbean coast, El Porvenir, Atlantida (drive time; approx. 4.5 hours)
• Overnight in El Porvenir, or La Ceiba (Corinto Pearl Resort, Omega Tours, Villa de Soledad, or similar)


Day 10: La Ceiba – Rio Cangrejal
• Breakfast (included in hotel)
• Visit a women’s co-op that makes handicrafts
• Nature hike Guaruma trail in Pico Bonito National Park
• Overnight in El Porvenir, or La Ceiba (Corinto Pearl Resort, Omega Tours, Villa de Soledad, or similar)


Day 11: La Ceiba – Cayos Cochinos National Marine Reserve
• Early Breakfast to-go (included in hotel)
• Transfer to the Garifuna community of Sambo Creek
• Boat ride to Cayos Cochinos Marine Reserve (snorkelling gear included, beach time, and lunch included in Laru Beya Cabins, community run)* this activity is subject to weather conditions
• Overnight in El Porvenir, or La Ceiba (Corinto Pearl Resort, Omega Tours, Villa de Soledad, or similar)


Day 12: Cuero & Salado - Tela
• Breakfast (included in hotel)
• Visit Cuero & Salado Wildlife Refuge, short train ride to the launch point, then boat ride in the mangrove channels, lots of birds, howler monkeys, and if lucky spot a manatee
• Visit artisanal cassava bread factory and tasting tour run by a women’s co-op
• Transfer to Tela, Atlantida (approx.. 1.5 hours)
• Overnight in Tela (Hotel Playa Bonita or similar)


Day 13: Tela Beach
• Breakfast (included in hotel)
• Free day for the beach (Hotel Playa Bonita is a few steps from the beach)

Day 14: Tela – San Pedro Sula Airport
